The reading passage introduces the topic of deforestation and the author’s views on its benefits. He says that new technology has enabled deforestation which caters to the growing demands of food and living space, and also has economic benefits. The speaker in the listening section disagrees. He believes that even though there are short term benefits, consequences on the long term are adverse.
First of all, the author in the reading passage states that deforestation helps in creating more farmland which can be used to grow crops and raise livestock. According to him, this has substantial benefits in terms of feeding more people and also as items which can be exported for economic prospects. The speaker however counters the author’s viewpoint by stating that these are short term benefits. In the long run, however, deforestation leads to clearing of massive rainforests, which house diverse ecosystems. He cites the example of Brazil, where the 60% of the rainforest has been cleared. His suggestion is to use advanced technology in preserving these rainforests, while looking for alternative methods of farming such as hydroponics which does not need soil.
In the reading passage, the author further states that because population is on the rise, the need for residential areas requires land which can be accommodated by deforestation. The speaker however sheds light on how forests are a major source of oxygen and deforestation lead to displacement of a vast number of species. He asserts that cutting down trees to obtain short term benefits are reflective of an irresponsible behaviour.
Finally, the author of the passage concludes by saying the forestry industry in a part of the national economy in many countries such as Brazil, Thailand, and Indonesia and that the need for lumber, furniture and paper creates jobs for many people residing here. The speaker contends this by saying that the countries where forestry thrives are all developing nations, where the workers are paid meagre amounts for dangerous jobs that they undertake.
To sum up, the author and the speaker hold very different and conflicting opinions on deforestation, as is evident from this essay.
