The reading and the lecture are both about the use of Chaco great houses in New Mexico in 12th century. The author of the reading believes that the great houses was used for many purposes. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He thinks that the great houses were not used for the purpose that the lecturer mentions.
First of all, the author points that the Chaco structures were used for residential purpose because of the its structural design which is similar to the apartments that were evident in that place. The point is challenged by the lecturer. The author says that the outside of the building was similar to the apartments, however the interior doesn't have enough fire place to cook for 100 people that resides in that that house. So, the primary function of the house was not residential.
Secondly, the author contends that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies such as maize for long period of time. The article notes that because of the size of those structures , storing food product was evident in order to keep food from spoiling. The lecturer rebuts this claim. he suggests that the theory is unsupported since the excavation in that site did not reveal any traces of maze or remains of any storing container.
Finally, the author states that the Chaco's structures were utilized for ceremonial place since the archaeologist found huge heap of ceremonial products that were found in that site while excavating. The article mentions that the broken pots in that site were the left over broken pots after finishing the meals. The lecturer posits that the there were lots of other materials were found in that area such as building materials. Hence, the lecturer establishes that the site was used to throw heaps of trashes of building material from the construction of Chaco's structures and the pots were from the workers that ate meal and threw the pots into the trash.
