The reading passage states that one of the portraits of a teenage girl may represent herself and provides three arguments including the decision of her extended family, a similarity of the Casandra sketch and the style of the portrait. However, the lecturer cast doubt on each idea of the author.
First and foremost, the article suggests that the extended family of Austin gave permission to use the portrait of the teenage girl as an illustration after decades of her death. On the other hand, the lecturer rejected this point by saying that the permission held 70 years after her death which gives an idea that her family at that time also have no idea about what she looks like.
Secondly, the reading indicates the nose, mouth and the overall shape of the face of the portrait of a teenage girl without any signature and date is very similar to the Casandra sketch that is the look of adult Austin. In contrast, the lecturer argued that Austin has many female cousins in their teenage years in the period of teenage yours of Austin because their family was huge. Also, most experts believe that it is the image of one of the nieces of Austin.
Finally, the passage claims that the style of the portrait look alike the painter Ozais Humphrey who was active during the late 1780s and early 1790s and he was only affordable for wealthy families like Austins'. Nonetheless, the professor made a counterclaim to the idea by explaining that the similar cover of the teenage girl portrait sold by Williams when Austin was around 27 years old. According to her, the other evidence refutes that the portrait of teenage girl is not represented teenage Austin.
