TOEFL T P O 14 Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage and the lecture are discussing an interesting topic about the salvage logging done after a forest fire. The reading passage states a positive point of view about this practice and provides intensive information and reason for support. However, the lecture opposes the claim of the reading passage and refutes every argument of the reading passage as follow.

First of all, the reading passage sustains the benefit of salvage logging by remarking that this practice allows a faster and better regrow of the new trees and plants. On the contrary, the lecture points out the damage of this practice explaining how the dead plants return necessary nutrients to the soil. In consequence, the lack of nutrients could be a main factor of the soil degradation in the long run.

Secondly, the reading passage argues that rotting wood and dead trees contribute for the increment of the spruce bark beetle that can damage the spruce trees. The lecture, on the other hand, challenges this argument by acknowledge there is no evidence spruce bark beetle could damage the trees. Moreover, dead tress and plants left after a fire are also habitat for many other species other than the beetles, like birds, that are also very important for the good health of the forest's ecosystem.

Finally, the reading passage makes emphasis in the economic benefit of the salvage logging by incrementing job offers and providing wood for many other industries. Once again, the lecture questions the reading passage explaining how expensive equipment, like helicopters, and special trucks, and vehicles, necessary to salvage logging are. Furthermore, the jobs offered for salvage logging usually are temporal, and require specialised workers from other areas.
