The reading and the lecture are both about whether the fine lines covering the skeletal bones of Sinosauropteryx is served as feathers. The author of reading opposed this idea. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the writer. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author suggests that the fine lines structure may formed after the animal's feath, which is demonstrate that it is not represent in the living dinosaur. The lecturer rebuts this claim made by the author. He mentions that this structure well served for the feather of the dinosaur.
Secondly, writer points out that we cannot sure which part of the dinosaur that hte structures were. He suggests that the lines covering the skeleton are fossilized remains of frills rather remains of feathers. The professor opposed this idea. He said that the chemical research reveals that the frills are not contain proteins. However, the fossial contains protein, which is shows that the skin fibers are not the remains of frills.
Finally, the author mentions that the Sinosauropteryx fossil were mostly positioned at the backbone and the tail of animal. As a result, the linese can not serve the usual function of feathers that are help animals fly and control temprerature. The lectuerer, in contrast, feels that the feathers of the dinosaurs have color so, it may served the other function like attract the mate. This function is called display function. He also mentions that many bird today have such a feather in their tail and also used to attract mate.
