The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about the causes of the odd sounds in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The reading passage claims that there are three theories for this phenomenon. The lecturer, on the other hand, not only categorically casts doubt on every single point raised by the author of the reading passage through citing three counter-arguments but also believes that none of the mentioned theories is enough convincing.
To begin with, the author of the reading passage establishes that the sounds of orca whales might be one of the sources for those eccentric sounds. Conversely, the lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that at the first glance, this cause that those sounds were produced by the orca whales seems plausible but they live near the surface of the ocean water and the submarines existed and moved deep in the ocean. Therefore, the Russian people lived in the submarine were not able to hear those sounds. Also, he mentions that those whales could be easily detected by submarines if the submarines moved near the surface of the ocean water.
Furthermore, unlike the reading passage which brings up this idea that giant squids could be a great explanation for those odd sounds, the lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the passage. The lecturer specifies that the odd sounds firstly detected in 1960 and suddenly disappeared after 1980; however, the squids are still living there and they did not move any other areas. Therefore, there is no good reason for the disappearance of hearing the odd sounds for two decades.
Eventually, the reading goes on to mention that those eccentric sounds may be related to another country's submarines that stealthily moved in that area. Notwithstanding, the lecturer points out that this idea does not hold up because the sounds were changing directions quickly; however, the submarines could not change their direction at that time. Also, in that time, the engine of the submarines had huge sounds, thus, if those sounds related to the submarines, the sounds of the engine of the submarines would have been detected.
