TOEFL T P O 32 - Integrated Writing Task

This material addresses the question of stange sounds, which were being heard by Soviet submarines' crews in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean for nearly twenty years, until the 1980s. The reading passage presents the approaches that try to explain the origin of the mentioned sounds. The lecture, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating the professor's opinion about this arguable issue, which is denying all the explanations provided in the article.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that odd noises might originate from orca whales, which live in the corresponding areas, and emit sound signals while attracting a partner. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that whales live near the surface of the Ocean, amd consequently their sounds cannot be heard by crews down in the water. Furthermore, sonars of the submarines would fix whales, which did not happen.
Additionally, the article posits that a huge squid may be the source of the sounds. It is proposed that sonars would not register squids, which approached the boats to find out their origin. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she metions that squid always lived in the same place, and the fact that sailors do not hear those sounds nowadays proves that squids are not their/its source.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that some other submarines may be the cause of disturbance. This goes counter to the information in the listening passage, according to which, there are no such boats that are able to move that much quickly to be heard from various places in a short period of time, and that have silent engines invisisble for Russian submarines' sonars.
