TOEFL TPO 08 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading claims that Chevalier memoir has many distorted or invented events to become more exciting and glamorous and prove it with three points. On the other hand, the professor opposes each point by saying that the memoir is not possibly hundred percent accurate but it is reliable as a historical source.
First, the reading states that the money that Chevalier spent on gambling and partying is borrowed from a Swiss merchant. The reading concludes that as Chevalier was not rich. The professor refutes it by saying that he was not poor. On the contrary he was rich, however, this wealth means he had assets, not cash. To convert the properties to money by selling it, it consumes time. Therefore, he borrowed the money at the moment for the subsequent payback.
Second, the reading claims that the conversation Chevalier had with Voltaire is inaccurate because it was written after many years by Chevalier, and he may possibly forgot the conversation precisely. The professor opposes this statement by saying that the Chevalier wrote down each night after the conversations. Consequently, he kept them for many years, and subsequently, he implied them in his memoir. Also, Some witnesses attested that Chevalier used journals and notes to recall the events for writing the memoir.
Third, the reading claims that the Chevalier's escape from a notorious prison in Venice is fake. Actually, he had a number of politically well-connected friends in Venice who bribed the jailers to free him. The professor refutes that by saying there were many prisoners that have well-connected friends, however not one of them do this bribing exercise. According to Venetian documents, after Chevalier escaped, the ceiling of the cell, which Chevalier was kept there, was repaired. Thus, this illustrates that the escape event was not invented or distorted.
