The article states that there are reasons to believe that the zebra mussel invasion cannot be stopped and that it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in North America. The article provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that there are ways to control the zebra mussel spread and refute each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the history of zebra mussel;s spread suggest that the invasion might be unstoppable. The professor refutes this point by saying that in the past people couldn't control zebra mussel invasion because they don't have enough knowledge. He states that for example people can empty ballast's water of ships and by this zebra mussels that attached to bottom of ships will be thrown away to salt water where they die.
Second, the article posits that zebra mussels often have no predators in their new habitats. However, the professor says that this situation only exists in the beginning of zebra mussels presence in new habitats. According to the professor lots of birds eat mussels and after a while when they know the presence of mussels in their vicinity, they begin to change their habitat and eat mussels.
Third, article states that zebra mussels are likely to cause a decline in the overall fish population in mutual habitats. The professor opposes this point by explaining that mussels only have negative effect on fish populations that prey on planktons. We also learn that mussels can have positive effect on fish populations that live in bottom of water and don't eat on planktons.
