TOFEL TPO52
Both the reading and the lecture discusses whether it is appropriate for people to construct colonies on asteroids. The reading strongly supports the plan, implying that asteroids are better choices for colonization than the Moon or other planets. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes it by explaining some backlashes that may occur.
First, lower gravity on asteroids does make landing and taking off relatively easy while also enabling spacecrafts to carry more resources. However, the speaker pointed out that lower gravity can lead to decreasing muscle mass and bone density, which can cause health risks to long-term dwellers.
Second, even though the concept of mining materials that are scarce on earth seems profitable, the professor indicates that costs should be taken into factor as well. Supporting colonies and transporting materials back to Earth can generate expenditures. Furthermore, it is possible that they cannot make profits by such activities, since large quantitation of harvesting can lift up supply, leading to the diminishing of prices.
Lastly, the lecturer acknowledges that just as the reading has mentioned, people can easily land on asteroids when they approach Earth's orbit. Still, once the asteroids move away, it will be difficult for humans to return to Earth. That is, at certain times, traveling between Earth and those asteroids takes even more time than a trip to Mars.
To sum up, the speaker thinks that setting up colonies on asteroids is not a practical initiative.
