The passage questions the accuracy of the memoir written by Chevalier de Seingalt recounting his life and adventures and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that the memoir is pretty accurate and reliable and refutes each of the passage's reasons.
First, the passage states that Chevalier was not rich as he claims in is memoir because he had to borrow considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that Chevalier had assets which needed some time to be converted to cash, in the meantime, he borrowed money from a Swiss merchant to spend.
Second, the article claims that the memoir could not capture the conversation between Chevalier and the famous writer Voltaire accurately. But, the professor argues by saying that Chevalier, every night, wrote notes about the conversation he had with Voltaire, and while writing his memoir he regularly consulted those notes.
Third, the reading says that Chevalier escaped from prison in Venice through well-connected friend and by offring a bribe. However, the professor opposes this by saying that old government document in Venice state that after Chevalier's escape from prison, the prison had to repair the sealing.
