Both the reading and the lecture discuss the consequences of a company's strategy regarding the reduction of work hours in order to reach some goals. The author brings up three different reasons to argue that proposed strategy will be useful. However, the lecturer clearly disagrees with the mentioned idea in the text and refutes each of the author's reason.
First, the article claims that not only the cumulative profit of the company will be increased due to the reduction of paid salaries but also the society will see a significant reduction in the unemployment rate. According to the reading, there will be a vacant position for a new person when an employee will work just 80 percent of predefined rate. On the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on this opinion by explaining that the company has to pay the total of employee’s health insurance without considering work hours.
Second, the reading posits that company will be able to add some new employees and the rate of unemployment will be reduced subsequently. However, the lecturer contradicts the idea and thinks that, with the hiring of new employees, the cost of training and additional computers will cut the company’s profit as well. So, the current jobs will become unpleasant due to companies expectation against its employees.
Finally, the article says that the reduction of work hours will provide more time for employees. But, the lecturer thinks that four-day work per a week will present some risks to employee's life and a reduction in quality will be observed. Also, there will not be an opportunity for improvement in their careers.
