The reading and the lecture are both about Rembrandt, who was an artist. The author of the reading believes that Rembrandt’s drawings were not painted by rembrandt. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article. She thinks that the painting indeed was made by Rembrandt.
First of all the author points out that the woman was dressed inconsistently. It is mentioned that the woman was wearing a white linen cap that slaves would wear, but she was also wearing a luxurious fur coat that no slave would wear. Rembrandt who is known for the detail in the dressing of the person, would not make it that inconsistent. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that originally, there was no fur coat. Furthermore she adds that the fur coat was added years later so that it would add more value.
Secondly, the author points out that Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow. The article notes that the face should look partially in shadow, but it does not look like that. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that before the coat was added, the lighting was different.
Finally, the author states that the painting was painted on a multiple panel that were glued.. He establishes that Rembrandt would usually never paint on wood glued together. The lecturer says otherwise by stating that when they added the fur coat, they also added a single piece of wood.
