TPO-04 - Integrated Writing Task Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant. For instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37°C, no matter whether the environment is wa

The article and the lecture are both about dinosaurs, which is their characteristic may or may not be defined as endotherm is still a debate. The author believes that dinosaurs should be placed as endotherms. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She believes that dinosaurs, on the other hand, are not endotherms.

First of all, the author states that fossils of dinosaurs were found in the polar area, where the surrounding environment is fairly cold and not suitable for animals that could not generate their own body's temperature to survive. Therefore, dinosaurs should be endotherms, in which their bodies temperature can be regulated independently. The lecturer refutes this point. She is the opinion that the fossils evident are not enough to conclude dinosaurs as endotherms. She states the surrounding environment was warmer than today, and the dinosaurs could rely on external milieu temperature as many others reptiles did.

Secondly, the author argues that position of dinosaur's leg is irrelevant to a body structure of reptile, which usually attached to the side rather than underneath the body. Such anatomy viewpoint is pointing dinosaurs in the direction of endotherms. In contrast, the lecturer considers this point of view in a different angle. She thinks that the leg position is not an indication of a high-energy creature but simply as the way to support dinosaurs heavyweight.

Finally, the professor mentions about the presence of growth ring structure in dinosaur. As the article use Haversian ring as one of their support for endotherms, the growth ring structure, on the other hand, is the indication of rapid growth. This rapid growth phenomenon, which is seen in many reptiles, is an evident suggest dinosaurs belong to the reptile column.
