Reading and lecture are both debating whether or not dinosaurs were endotherms, which means if they were cold-blooded or warm-blooded animals. On the one hand, the writer states that they were endotherms, providing three reasons of support. However, the lecturer casts doubts on the claims made but the writer, saying that his arguments have some problems when compared to real facts.
First, Polar Regions used to have different temperatures millions of years ago, namely, these were higher than at present times. In other words, it can be safely assumed that the temperatures were high enough to sustain animals that were not endotherms, at least during summer. Furthermore, dinosaurs might have emigrated or hibernated if the temperatures dropped down to much during winter, as modern reptiles do nowadays. This standpoint refutes the writer's point of view
Second, the legs' position can be explained by other theory. This particular position offers more advantages than just using them the legs for running, such as supporting the weight of large animals. Therefore, contrary to what the passage sustains, this is not a physical feature that provides proof that dinosaurs were endotherms.
Third, it is true that dinosaurs have Haversian canals, which are responsible for animals' growth. But, at the same time, dinosaurs had growth rings as well, which show the periods when dinosaurs' growth was active. According to these, dinosaurs registered a fast growth when temperatures were high, and started to decrease or even stop, during cooler seasons, whereas endotherms' growing process is not diminished or halted by cold. As a result, the theory stated by the author is rejected once again.
