TPO-04 - Integrated Writing Task Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant. For instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37°C, no matter whether the environment is wa

Both the reading and the lecture discuss endotherms, which are animals that can regulate their body temperature. Moreover, there is a debate of whether dinosaurs were or were not endotherms, because of their relationship with modern reptiles which are not endotherms. However, the passage claims that there is evidence to think that dinosaurs were endotherms despite their kinship with reptiles. On the other hand, the lecturer thinks that these claims have many flaws, and casts doubt on them.

First, the passage claims that because there are dinosaur fossils found in the polar regions they must have been endotherms. Non-endotherms or cold-blooded animals cannot survive cold climate such as those in polar regions so dinosaurs could not be cold-blooded. The lecturer challenges this argument, she states that back then the climate in the poles was warm enough for cold-blooded creatures to survive at certain times of the year. Furthermore, they could have easily migrated elsewhere in colder times.

Second, the author asserts that physiological evidence points dinosaurs as warm-blooded. the text mentions that endotherms often have their legs beneath their body because this allows them to execute sustained physical activity-such as running- that cold-blooded animals cannot perform. The professor in the lecture rebuts this argument, she points out that physical activity is not the only reason for which an animal could have their legs this way. She explains that this also allows animals to handle more body weight, and given that dinosaurs are enormous, is not hard to realize this is the reason for their legs to be in such a way.

Finally, the article stands that bone structure in dinosaurs is that of an endotherm. There are internal structures called Haversian canals, which allow endotherms to grow quickly, something non-endotherms do not do. However, the lecturer does not agree with this argument. She says there is evidence in the dinosaur's bones, that show that they grew quickly in warm climates but not on the cold, a proper characteristic of cold-blooded animals.
