The article discusses how the buldings that were discovered in Chaco canyon in New Mexico were used for and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that unfortunately none of these theories are convincing and he refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading avers that the Chaco structures were clearly residential, because it may look like the early versions of the southwest societies houses. The professor refutes this point by stating that this idea could true if we examine the structures from outside. However, if we see the houses from inside, there are cast doubts about this idea. He explains that if this houses inhabited by hundreds of people, we should find a remains of fire places. Excavations have reveled there are few places for fireplaces, so it ruled out the idea of these structures could be residential.
Second, the article claims that the Chaco Canyon structures were used to store food supplies, such as grain maize. The professor, on the other hand, states that this theory has not supported by any evidence. Unfortunately, excavations for the area have uncovered any traces for maize remains or the containers that used for store maize. This means, if the structures were truly for storage grain maize, we should find remains of maize spills or remains of the containers.
Third, the reading posits that houses were used as ceremonial center. this idea supports by the broken pots that have been discovered in one house, called Pueblo Alto. The professor opposes this point by stating that this idea is also unsupported by evidence. Though the author has mentioned the discovery of broken pots, other materials have been found in the location too. These materials are not related to special ceremonies, however, these materials are construction materials. The professor concludes that this location could be a trash place for a construction site. Also, the broken pots could be regular trash that comes from meals of construction workers.
