TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

Reading and lecture are both debating the utility of the Chaco Canyon "great houses". On the one hand, the writer states three possible theories, offering reasons of support. However, the lecturer rejects his arguments, saying that his theories are unconvincing when compared to real facts.

First, the houses did not serve as a residential unit, because there were not enough fire places for all the people to cook. This is shown by the fact that some houses could have been inhabited by one hundred families, but the number of fireplaces was sufficient only for ten families. Therefore, this physical proof demonstrates that the first theory cannot be true.

To continue, the second theory does not have a solid ground as well. The writer asserts that these buildings were used for storing food supplies, such as maize. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this idea, adding that there were not found significant traces of grains, how it should have been normal. Furthermore, maize requires large containers, but diggers did not found anything resembling those. As a result, the lack of evidence clearly contradicts the passage.

Last but not the least, escalators discovered much evidence which shows that Chaco structures were not ceremonial centers. They brought to light building materials and tools, and other objects used by builders. The presence of broken pots proves only that these were containers for foods, and the workers probably kept their food inside. This last arguments gainsays also the author's point of view.
