TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th

The reading provides three theories which determine how the buildings of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico were used. On the other hand, the professor refutes each author's theories and says that there aren't many evidences for supporting those theories.

Initially, the reading mentions first theory by saying that Chaco's structures were purely residential and hundreds of people used to live there. On the contrary, the professor states that even though outside of the Chaco's buildings may be similar to the large, well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos, inside of the Chaco's buildings demonstrates that such many people couldn't have been living there. He says that there aren't many rooms and fire places in Chaco's buildings that were required for many inhabitant people.

Furthermore, the reading introduces second theory. This theory claims that Chaco's buildings used to store food supplies; for instance, grain maize; which was one of the main crops of Chaco people and could be stored for long periods, was stored there and that was because of size of the Chaco's houses. In contrast, the professor claims that there aren't enough evidences to proof this theory. He says that if these houses had stored grain maize, they would have had big remained containers or remained maize crops on the floor.

Finally, the reading provides third theory, which claims that Chaco's houses were used as ceremonial centers and it is because of the finding of large number of broken pots. Theory is of the conviction that people used to gather around for special ceremonies and eat meals in these pots. However, the professor refutes this theory and says there have been found lots of other materials beside pots; such as, construction building materials include sand and stones. He claims that pots could be used by building constructors and were lefted behind.
