Both the reading and the listening discuss the Chevalier de Seingalt memoir. The author describes that there are three main reasons to support the idea that Chevalier de Seingalt memoir is not the accurate and he disorders many events in the memoir. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and asserts that no memoir can possibly be correct in every detail, but Chevalier De Seingalt memoir is pretty accurate overall and it is a reliable historical source, and brings up three reasons and elucidate some evidence in order to refute what is mentioned in the reading passage.
First off all, the writer points out that he was not rich and wealthy due to the fact that he borrowed a large amount of money from a Swiss merchant. Nevertheless, the professor states that Chevalier de Seingalt spend huge amounts of money on gambling and parties, so he had wealth, but it was property so he should sell to get money. Therefore, he borrowed first until his assets convert into money. For this reason, borrowing money is not representative of being poor.
Second, according to the reading, the detractors are doubtful about the accuracy of the conversations that Chevalier place in the memoir. While, the lecturer brings up the idea that the chevalier wrote down all the conversations each night immediately after conversing and he kept them for many years. Moreover, persons who lived with him confirm the notes when he composed the memoir.
Third, the Chevalier's escape from the prison makes a lot of controversy among the critics. However, the speaker posits that many people who be in jail (other prisoners) had more politically powerful friends as he did, but none of them were able to escape. Besides, there are the evidence-based government that after he escaped from the prison the ceiling of his prison room was repaired, which strengthen the Chevalier’s claim about his escape from the prison.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
