TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including ki

The author describes that there are some doubts about the accuracy of Chevalier's memoir and provides three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer states that even though no memoir is accurate overall, the Chevalier's memoir is the reliable history resource and refutes each of the author's reasons with rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that Chevalier was poor, since he borrowed a large amount of money from a Swiss merchant. Nevertheless, the professor posits that he was a wealthy person due to the fact that he spent a bunch of money at Swiss in parties and gambling. To be more specific, he was wealthy, but he should first sell his assets in order to get cash.
Second, according to the reading, critics are dubious about the validity of the conversations that Chevalier recorded in the memoir. Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that Chevalier wrote all of the conversations each day after his talks, and they were kept for many years. Besides, persons, who lived with Chevalier consulted with the author and confirmed the accuracy of the conversations when composing the memoir.
Third, the author expresses that Chevalier jailers were bribed to free him. However, the speaker points out that other prisons at that time had even more politically well-connected friends, but none of them could escape from the jail. In fact, bribery was hard. Furthermore, there is some documentary evidence from the government, which indicates that soon after Chevalier escaped from the jail, the ceiling of the room was repaired. Had he not escaped from the jail, the ceiling of his room would not have been repaired.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
