TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c

In the lecture, the professor argues against the population hypothesis and contents that predation is more likely cause the decline of sea otter populations.

First and foremost, the pollution theory is weakened by the fact that people scarcely found dead sea otters washed up Alaskan coast. Because if they are killed by pollution, it would be common to find dead sea otters washed up shores. By contrast, if they are actually killed by predators, their body would not immediately show up on shores. Therefore, the predation might explain the decline of sea otters.

Second, it's true that orca preys on larger animals such as other whales. But whales have disappeared for centuries because of human hunters. Therefore, in order to survive, the orcas have to change their diet because only smaller animals are available. And this may cause the decline of the population of seals, sea lions and sea otters.

Last but not the least, the uneven pattern of otter decline can be better explained by predation hypothesis than pollution hypothesis. The population decline of sea otters seems to depend on whether their habitat is accessible for orca. Because orca are very large, they can only prey on the sea otters that live in open water, where the see otter population declined significantly. However, in the shallow and rocky location, where the orca could not achieve, the sea otter population is not effected.

Therefore, based on the aforementioned analysis, the professor supports the predation hypothesis.
