The reading and the lecture are both about otters and their decrease in population. The author of the reading believes that otters are decreasing, because of pollution. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that otters are decreasing from predators.
First of all, the author points out that pollution is the main reason of otter decrease. It is mentioned that there are known sources of pollution along the coast of where otters live, one source being industrial chemical pollution. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that predators such as orcas are being increased in population which is leading to more otter being killed. Furthermore, she argues that orcas mainly feast on otters.
Secondly, the author contends that other animals such as sea lions were being decreased in population. The article notes that usually pollution affects the whole ecosystem, not just one animal. The lecturer argues with this statement. She says that another reason is the human hunting of mammals. She elaborates this by saying that a few years ago, there was a time when otters were close from extinction from human hunting.
Finally, the author states that Some areas were not affected, but some other areas affected otter greatly. The article establishes that, the currents of the water carried pollutants to different areas. The lecturer on the other hand states that the uneven deduction of otters is due to the location of the orcas. She puts forth on this idea by stating that orcas are big and cannot go to shallow waters.
