According to the reading, there was a decline in sea otter population along the Alaskan coast a few years ago and the cause for the decline is attributed to two possible explanations. They are environmental pollution or predator attack. The reading inclines towards environmental pollution as a more valid reason and states three reasons that support this stance. However, on the other hand, the lecturer disputes this stance and argues that the sea otter decline is a consequence of predator attack.
First of all, the reading states that increased levels of chemicals in the Alaskan coast have deteriorated the resistance of sea otter to life threatening infections and thereby caused their deaths. In contrary, the lecturer disagrees with this idea. She points out that there were no dead sea otters found floating on the beaches or shoreline. Further, she adds that the sea otters could have been eaten immediately by the predators, thereby accounting for the missing dead sea otters along the shoreline.
Secondly, the reading suggests that there has been a decline in population of other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions along the Alaskan coast. The reading mentions that this could be a consequence of the prevailing environmental pollution in the area. The reading further adds that the widely poccuring predator in the Alaskan coast, the orca, would prefer to hunt whales and not sea otters. In opposition, the lecturer states that there has been a decline in whale population and thereby the orca would hunt the sea otter and sea lions.
Finally, the reading states that the uneven pattern of otter decline is based on the effect of pollution on the appropriate area. However, the lecturer points out that this variance is caused based on the accesibility of the orca to these areas. In addition, she provides evidence to support this stance by proving appropriate decline in areas where orca had better accesibility.
