The reading and the lecture are both talking about literature, which seems to be in decline. The author says that fewer and fewer people read literature nowadays. The lecturer states that there are other well-written books available on the market, which can be comparable with literature.
First, books about science, history, politics are as good as poems, plays and novels in terms of providing significant knowledge. These can both stimulate the imagination and offer a valuable perspective upon different aspects of live. In other words, even if some individuals gave up on reading literature, they found other interesting sources for gaining various intellectual benefits. This directly contradicts what the first passage indicates.
Second, people developed other methods to express emotions, to transmit messages and to entertain the human mind. The author states that the information provided by television or the Internet is not intellectually demanding and that the content is not qualitative. However, the speaker talks about a cultural evolution in this area. Therefore, movies and films are capable to communicate emotions and empathizes more directly than classic literature. This is a strong standpoint that contradicts the author's point of view.
Third, the modern writers are not capable to provide valuable books. Moreover, their style is so difficult to be interpreted that even our ancestors would choose to read something else. Even though the author throw the fault on the individuals' lack of interest, the real problem belongs to the untalented writers. This fact is contradicting the passage which blames the audience and the publishers. In conclusion, the author and the lecturer appear to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
