The author describes that nowadays young people are reading less literature than they used to which is really have a bad impact on culture and provides three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer states that although people read less literature in these days, it does not mean that it causes unpleasant effects on the society and culture and refutes each of the author's points with rational grounds.
First of all, the writer states that nothing but literature can provide the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Nevertheless, the professor states that the science, political and history books provide intellectual stimulation, and they have high quality. These books provide great creation and imaginations as literature books provide. It is unfair to say that if someone does not read literature, means that s/he will not read high-quality books.
Second, according to the reading, the majority of people prefer trivial forms of entertainment, such as watching television and music videos, which has lowered the level of culture in general. However, the speaker brings up the idea that form of the representation of the culture has changed in these days. To put it differently, people can watch a brilliant movie and listen to a good music in order to gain information about the culture rather than reading literature books. In this day and age, culture is not written and we witness different forms of culture.
Third, the writer expresses that although there are many talented writers today, they lack an audience. Conversely, the professor posits that there is less support for literature due to authors' faults. To be more specific, modern literature is difficult to understand. So, audience shortage has nothing to do with poor standards of today's readers.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
