TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

The article states that cane toads were introduced to Australia to protect farmers crops by eating harmful insects. However, the enormous increase in their numbers caused them to threaten small native animals, and this problem had to be faced. Three reasons of support were provided. But, the professor justifies that it is an uneasy process leading to unwanted environmental damage, and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading claims that building a fence is a proposed solution, especially that this method was used before. The professor, however, refutes this point by indicating that young cane toads and eggs are not inhibited to cross from side to side by a fence due to the fact that they are present in rivers and streams, which carry eggs and baby toads to the other side. Only small number is enough to show that constructing a fence is not a reliable solution.

Second, the article posits that another solution would be capturing and destroying cane toads by volunteers. However, the professor opposed that point by indicating that untrained young volunteers are capable of destroying Australian native frogs as well. It is very hard to differentiate between the two types of frogs, because of that destroying can toads was not a convenient option.

Finally, the reading states that the reproduction and maturing of cane toads can be stopped by a disease-causing virus which is very selective for them. The professor refutes this point by saying that this has dreadful consequences on America's native toads. Australian cane toads are transported to America by various ways, like by the help of researchers and pet collectors. The virus may be spread so that it would attack America's cane toads as well, which are a chief part in their ecosystem. Because of that, all the ecosystem will suffer drastically.
