TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec
The reading states that cane toad species was intentionally introduced to Australia with the expectation that it would rescue the crop of the farmers by eating harmful insects. Moreover, sadly, the result was not the one they expected because they multiplied swiftly, and this vast population threatens small native animals. The passage provides three strategies to avoid the distribution of the cane toad in Australia. However, the professor comments that none of these approaches are useful for solving this matter and refutes each of the solutions.
First, the passage claims that building a national fence would be one possible solution to avoid the distribution of the toad. Moreover, this method has been implemented in another place before, and there is no need for being worried about its consequences. The lecturer, meanwhile, makes the argument that it is improbable to limit young toads from moving because they use rivers and streams to flow from one place to another.
Second, although the reading passage asserts that the toads could be easily captured and diminished by some volunteers, the professor disagrees and believes that this can be harmful if the collectors would be some inexperienced people. She adds that because they can damage some other species like frogs which live near the river or the streams close to the toad eggs.
Third, in contrast to the lecture which posits that some researchers are making a disease-causing virus to manage and control toad populations, the lecturer says that this idea is trouble-making. She strongly comments that this virus can make some difficulties in the original habitat of some endangered animals because they are an important part of the whole ecosystem. Thus, If they eliminate toads from the place, some other species related to these animals availability may suffer from this disappearance.
