The reading suggests three ways to save the endangered plant called Torreya Taxihofa, which is an evergreen tree that prevalent in the Florida. However, the professor claims that none of the solutions will give a satisfactory result. She adds that the advice written in the article does not solve the problem and unlikely to be successful. Therefore, she contradicts each of author’s reasons.
First, the reading avers that the Torreya taxihova should be planted in the northern part of Florida where it is the indigenous plant and has a suitable microclimate ( a situation where the weather condition different from the surrounding region) that supports the tree to thrive. The lecturer refutes the suggestion by explaining that the solution not feasible because of the effect of global warming. The global warming increases the temperature in the area from cool and damp to warm and dry. This condition will hinder the Torreya taxihova to flourish.
Second, the article posits that the plant should migrated, assist by the human, to the forest in the further north where the climate is colder. Due to the preceded experiment where the Torreya seeds and saplings have been successfully planted and grown, the article believes that bring back the flora to their original home will save the plant from an extinction. However, the lecturer contends that the plan probably will backfire since the plant may overgrowth and destruct the local ecosystem. She underscores the unpredictable outcome of this intervention. Furthermore, she explains the point with the black locus tree incident. The black tree is moved to the different area with a more suitable environment to develop however, the tree spread so quickly and killed the other tree.
Third, the author advices the Torreya taxihova preserves at the research centre since it is easier to protect and conduct research. The lecturer opposes this suggestion by stated that to resist the disease, the tree need to be relocated at the place with extensive and diverse ecosystem, research centre simply doesn’t have the capacity to provide it.
