TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi

According to the reading, the Torreya taxifolia, which is a type of evergreen tree commonly prevailent in Florida is declining. Experts suggest that there are three ways to address this decline. On the otherhand, the lecturer argues that all three proposed solution is not effective by providing contradicting examples against each of them.

First, the reading proposes to reestablish Torreya in the same location, i.e Florida, where it thrived for thousands of years. However, the lecturer disputes this opinion with a counter example. She points out that the areas in Florida where the trees once thrived are strongly affected by climatic conditions caused by global warming. Moreover, she adds that the areas are becoming drier and this inhibits the sustainability of Torreya in the proposed location.

Second, the reading suggests to replant the Torreya in forests further north where the temperature is significantly cooler. Nevertheless, the lecturer disagrees with this solution. She mentions that Black Locust tree, which was facing a similar decline, was moved to northern location for cooler climate resulting in adverse scenario. The replanting resulted in rapid growth of Black Locust that killed the other endangered trees in that area.

Finally, the reading claims that the Torreya can be preserved in research centers. In contrast, the lecturer points out that the Torreya will not have resistance to diseases. Further, she says that there must be large and genetically diverse quantity of Torreya for being able to defend itself against diseases.

In conclusion, the lecturer is in disagreement with the reading about the methods to preserve Torreya and effectively challenges the main points made by the reading by providing substantial examples.
