TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

Based on the reading material, it is stated that there are 3 viable benefits for planting genetically modified trees on a large scale. However, the lecturer finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and presents some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that genetically modified trees are designed to be harder than nature trees and as result, they can tolerate severe conditions more than wild trees. That being said, the lecturer repudiated this idea by clarifying that genetically modified trees are designed for one particular condition and it does not mean that they can survive in various situations. Thus, climate changes or insects infestations can wipe out genetically modified trees.
Another point mentioned by the author was that genetically modified trees bring a considerable number of economic benefits to farmers. That being said, the lecturer rejected this one too by stating that planting genetically modified trees has copious hidden costs farmers. They have to pay a plethora of money to companies, which produce the seeds of genetically modified trees, in order to buy seeds. Also by law, farmers have to pay money to companies every time in order to use their own tree's seeds.
The final point advanced in the reading passage was that genetically modified trees can be used in order to prevent over exploitation of wild trees. Yet again, the lecturer casted doubt on this idea. She said that planting genetically modified trees can cause more damages for nature trees. Genetically modified trees grow more aggressively than wild tress and if farmers plant them among the nature trees, they will compete with wild trees in order to get more sunlight, water and soil nutrients.
