TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

In this set of materials, the passage and the lecture offer two opposing points of view about genetically modified trees. While the passage lists some advantages of these trees, the speaker points out, although they have some advantages, the drawbacks of them outweigh the advantages.
First, the passage claims that genetically modified trees are designed to be more resistant, while the natural trees are more fragile. The lecture refutes this remark by pointing out, indeed genetically modified trees are resistant to one particular type of condition and if the condition changes, they all wiped out due to they are uniform in structure. However, the same change in condition does not lead to a complete destruction of natural trees. In natural trees, some species can survive during a rough condition.
In addition, the article asserts that genetically modified trees are more economically beneficial. On the other hand, the lecture argues that these kinds of trees have hidden costs. For instance, their seeds have a higher price, and every time one wants to thrive the seeds of trees which, he has already owned, according to low, they should pay the original company.
Finally, the author declares that the utilization of genetically modified trees can prevent the overexploitation of wild trees, so in order to survive the wild, it is indispensable to use genetically modified trees. However, the speaker contradicts this idea by illustrating the fact that these kind of trees are a treat to the wild because they grow aggressively amongst other natural trees and outcompete them.
