tpo 23
Both the reading passage and the lecture are about the decline of the yellow cedar trees. The writer suggests that scientists have three hypothyses that explain the yellow cedar decline. The lecturer on the other hand opposes the points made in the reading. He said that none of the explanation is accurate.
First and foremost, the lecturer explains that the cedar tree produces chemicals that could provent themselves from insects. Therefore, the beetle attacks is not the main reason of the decline of yellow cedar tree. However, this point is opposed by the reading, which claims that the beetle larvae eats the wood. As a result, the sustain attack from beetle would kill the yellow cedar.
Secondly, the professor states that bears cannot be the main reason of the decline of cedar tree because they are not located on those places where scientists have seen the decline of the tree. The teacher says that bears do not leave in islands where yellow cedar trees are decline. Nevertheless, this point view contradicts the reading, which states that the brown bears sometimes claw at the cedars so they could eat the tree bark that has high sugar content. Consequently, the bears are one of the reasons of the cedars decline.
Finally, the lecturer disagree with the suggestion made in the reading passage about the gradual changes of climate should be blame for the reduction of the cedars. The professor opposes this point by saying that the decline is found in the lower latitude where is hot weather. That is the opposite of what suppose to be if the climate is going to be a factor. Freezing in the higher latitudes is not as a result of the climate change. Therefore, the climate change could not be a factor of this decline.
