The article and the lecture are both about yellow cedar, which is an endangered species of tree. The writer talks about possible reasons that cause its decline. On the other hand, the speaker casts doubts on the claims made by the author, stating that his arguments are somewhat irrelevant when compared with reality.

First, insect parasites can not be the reason why healthy trees are dying. The writer specifies that there have been reported some case when beetle attacks lead to killing trees. However, the speaker refutes this idea by saying that those trees must have been already affected by other diseases, and therefore they did not resist to the attack of the beetles. Moreover, healthy trees have chemical substances that keep predators away. This is a strong counter-point to against the passage.

Second, bears can not be held responsible for the overall decline of yellow cedar, as the passage sustains. It is true that their aggressive way of feeding can create damages for the tree, but this is not enough to kill a tree. Not to mention that cedars' decline was recorded also in areas where there are not bears at all. Thus, this argument is not viable.

Third, climate change can not be blame for the rapid decrease of cedars. The writer says that the new meteorological conditions have caused a change in the trees' roots, making them grow during winter, and consequently suffering from freezing. Anyway, the lecturer refutes this idea because the reduction of trees takes place both in warm and old areas. Moreover, the first area has recorded a higher rate of declining. As a result, this last argument is not plausible. In conclusion, the author and the lecturer seem to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
