The reading and the lecture are both about the cedar trees. The article states that cedar trees are declining constantly in northwestern North America and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor says that the data provided in the reading is not adequate and refutes each of the author's points.
First, the article claims that the cedar trees are decreasing because of the beetle insect which usually eats the cedar tree. However, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that cedar trees are the most powerful chemical trees which have more resistance when compared to other trees. Furthermore, he states that these can be affected only if they are sick not by insects like the beetle.
Second, the text posits that another cause for the decline of the cedar trees is because of the brown bears. As the cedar trees have more sugar content, the bears usually want to eat these trees. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this point by explaining that these trees have existed in the northwestern North America where no bears are present in those islands. So bears are not responsible for the decline of the cedar trees.
Third, the article conveys that changes in the climate may also lead to the reduction of the cedar trees. Nevertheless, the professor says that the reading passage missed one fact that many trees at the lower elevation are warm and at higher elevation are colder. So the trees at the colder weather usually die. These trees die not because of the changes in the root system of the trees.
