TPO 24 Integrated TOEFL Writing(R)
The reading and lecture are both about whether 70 million old animal fossils of T Rex provide information of studying animal tissues or not. The author believes that the fossils of the T Rex gives essential information about the tissue of the animal whereas the lecturer opposes the idea by saying that the facts the author mentions as bases of his belief may be skeptical.
Firstly the author believes that the small branching channels inside the fossilized leg bone presents hollos in the bones where blood vessels were once located. The remarkable finding for the author was the presence of soft, flexible organic substance inside the channelswhich may correspond to the actual blood vessels of T Rex. But the lecturer opposes that the hollowness may have been created by bacteria and the soft and flexible organic substance may not represent blood vessels rather the substance may represent the residue of bacteria after leaving the animal.
Secondly, the author suggests that, the presence of spheres in various parts of the inner bone may correspond to the remains of blood cells. The article notes that the spheres had iron-a material which is crucial to red blood cells for transporting oxygen to tissues. Additionally the author contends that the size of the red dark centre of the sphere was of the red blood cells. The lecturer opposes the author's idea by saying that similar spheres were also found on other animals and those animals dod not have red blood vessels which according to the lecturer sums up the idea that the spheres are not necessarily the remains of red blood cells.
Finally, the author states that, presence of collagen which is a prime component of living bone tissue and forms collagen matrix corresponds to the fact that the tissue is in association with bone tissue as collagen is the type of biochemical material that is expected to be found in bone tissue. The lecturer opposes by srguing thatcollagen can not last longer than 1000 years whereas the fossil of the T Rex bone is 70 million year old. According to theory collagen can not sustain upto 70 million year. So the collagen found in the 70 million year old bone may be of the recent time.
