The lecture and the the article are about Zebra Mussel which are spreading in North America. The author of the article believes that zebra mussel are unstoppable. The professor cast doubts on this claim. He thinks that there are ways to stop their spread.
First of all, the author points at the fact that there is no way to stop the invasion of the Zebra Mussel. He states that the come to North America by 'ballast water' which is essential to carry cargo. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He states that ship can take the 'ballast water' in the start and then replace that with the ocean water, which is salty and can help kill these.
Second, the author contends that zebra mussel are hardy species and have high rate of reproduction as a result they are dominating in these areas. He also notes that they have no predators in the new environment. So their number is increasing dramatically. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He states that they did not have predators in the start but now many birds eat them. He elaborate this by mentioning that they have become and important prey now.
Finally, the author states that they compete with fish for eating plankton. The author establishes that because of this competition fish population is declining. The professor, on the other hand, posits that mussels are not that big of a threat. He puts forth the idea that, even though they compete with fish for plankton but the fish that survive on bottom plants is increasing.
In conclusion, the professor casts doubts on all the claims and theories of the author.
