TPO-26 - Integrated Writing Task The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot b

The reading contends that three reasons are proposed about the zebra mussel’s threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the idea in the reading passage that the zebra mussel’s invasion might be unstoppable. This is attributed to the fact that it is true that people in the past could not control their invasion because they did not have any knowledge about them at that time. People have found the effective way to eliminate the mussel’s spread is to use ballast water with ocean water. They are not capable to endure themselves against ocean water, and eventually, will die. Thus, the reading passage’s first idea is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the idea in the reading passage that they are able to dominate a new habitat once they are carried to the habitat. This is because even they are able to dominate new habitat, it is only in the beginning stage. Once bird find the presence of the mussels, they will shift their habitat to where a lot of mussels are; then, they start to hunt the mussel as their prey. Consequently, the reading passage’s second idea is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that it is possible to decrease population of plankton. Even they negatively impact on the population of plankton, they positively impact on bottom fish. This is because they could create nutrient for bottom fish. While the population of plankton might be declined, the population of species of bottom fish would be inclined. As a result, the reading passage’s final point is refuted.
