The reading discusses the different possible causes that may have contributed to the ice age. The author provides three different possibilities. However, the professor states that all what has been mentioned in the article is out dated, he refutes all the possible causes that were provided and he explains why.

First, the article mentions the disruption of the ocean currents as a possible cause. The professor posits that it's true that when the gulf stream was disrupted the climate might have been changed, but as he mentions that this would have only affected Europe and Northern America. And here comes why this possibility can't be true. Southern areas have been affected too. such as Australia and this explains that this possibility is far from the truth.

Second, the professor agrees with what has been mentioned in the article about the dust clouds from volcanic eruptions. Conversely, the professor mentions that if this was true, then it must have been a huge volcanic eruptions that would have caused other things besides the climate change. he mentions that there has been nothing recorded about striking visual effects such as changing in the snow colour from white to grey or brown, neither changes in the colour of the sunset. that's why the professor thinks that the volcanic eruptions weren't huge enough to cause the climate to change.

Third, the author claims that the consequences of the substantial decrease in the human population can be the reason behind the ice ages. On the other hand, the professor disputes that. he mentions that the population grew back quickly which means there wasn't enough time for the climate to change. Since as soon as the population started to grow back, trees started to get cut in order to make a space for agriculture. consequently, the massive amounts of carbon dioxide absorption that is mentioned in the passage didn't last long enough to be a possible explanation of the ice ages.
