The reading article talks about Robert E. Peary's North Pole expedition and put forth three theories to support the date and time taken for the journey from Greenland's coast to the North Pole. The lecture refuses the claims presented in the reading with counter arguments.
First, the reading passage refers to the National Geographic society's investigation and conclusion of the investigation about Peary's claim of reaching North Pole on April 7, 1909. The committee checked his records and equipment and found the claim consistent and persuasive. However, the lecture argues that, the investigation was not objective and the committee was composed of Peary's friends. His friends donated funds to the society, hinted biased decision. Along with that, it lasted only for two days and wasnot through enough.
Secondly, the article draws support from the recent expedition by Tom Avery, who reached North Pole in less than 37 days and followed the footsteps of Peary and used similar route and equipment. The lecture refuses the claim by stating, even though Avery used the same route and equipment, the weather conditions he faced were more favorable than what Peary faced. In addition, Avery carried less weight with him than Peary and his food was delivered by airplane. Makes the claim questionable and cannot be compared with Peary's expedition.
Lastly, the reading uses photographic evidence to support the claim. The shadows in the photographs taken On April 7, 1909 shows the Sun's position on that day. The lecture counters this theory by pointing out that, photographs does not provide enough evidence, based on the fact that the camera used was primitive. That camera produced fussy and blurry images. Moreover, the professor adds, those photographs are faded over the period and it is difficult to calculate the precise position of the Sun on that day.
In conclusion, the lecture dismisses all the claims presented in the reading article, citing lack of evidence, making it weakly convincing.
