tpo 28 Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

Both the reading and the lecture are about the doubts that Peary as an explorer reached the North pole on April of 1909. The reading passage claims that there are three arguments that support the claim that Peary reached for sure the North. On the contrary, the lecturer disagrees by saying that the claims made in the reading are not convincing.

First of all, the writer points out an investigation, which was made possible by the examination of this trip. The committee concluded that indeed Peary reached the North Pole. However, the lecture cannot disagree more by reasoning that the investigation did not exam this trip carefully. It took only two days, which is not enough time to come up with a real conclusion. Consequently, this argument seems bias.

The second argument the author gives is that Tom Avery made the same trek in less than 37 days by using the same kind of dogsleds and the same number of them. He concluded that Peary's claims are not impossible. On the other hand, the professor refutes this claim by saying that the weather conditions were not the same with the Avery's time. it was wild weather during the Peary's travel. Therefore the speed of the trip was not the same. Also Peary had to carry food with the snowmobiles, but Avery did not have food with him. So that this argument is not worth.

Finally, reading points out that photos that Peary took at that time are good evidence of the position of the Sun. Committee measured the shadows of the photographs to prove that. Nevertheless, the professor declares that the shadow of the photographs could be from the old age of photos, which were about 100 years old, so they could fade over time or could be because the accuracy of cameras at that time was not high standard. As a result, the shadows are not a good indicator of the accuracy of the position of the Sun. Therefore, this does not provide a strong evidence that Peary reach the North Pole on April seven in 1909.

In conclusion, points made in the reading contrast with the lecture.
