TPO-29 - Integrated Writing Task Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska's North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive,

The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the migration of the edmontosourus, a dinosaurus that lived one hundred million years ago, from what is today Alaska to the South escaping from the harsh winter and provides three main reasons for support. However, the lecture casts doubts on the claim made by the article. She thinks the edmontosourus did not migrate and could survive during the winter perfectly well, and she opposes to each of the reason of the reading passage.

First, the article sustains that the edmontosuarus travelled long distance looking for food growing better in the South than in the adverse conditions of North during the winter. Challenging this point, the lecture explains that one million years ago the region was warmer than today and enough plants and vegetables could persist to feed the animals. Moreover, the long summer days could provide an excellent condition for plants to flourish in abundance giving a good reservoir of nutrients during the winter.

Secondly, the reading passage claims the edmontosaurus migrated because they lived in herds. On the other hand, the lecture questions this point mentioning that many species live in herds for many motives and not only for migration, like protection. Thus, the reading passage's claim is a very weak reason for support.

Finally, the reading passage argues that the edmonosaurs could travel long distance, with a considerable speed, enough to travel to warmer regions on time for the season change. On the contrary, the lecture refutes the idea of the article, suggesting the younger animal would not have the skill to travel at the same speed as the adults and they would be left behind which would be very improbable to occur.
