The writer claims that there are three possible theories to explain the origin of strange sounds called quackers, while the professor expressed different opinions against all these theories by new evidence.
Firstly, the writer holds that the sound was actually the calls of male and female orca whales during their courtship ritual. However, the professor argues that the orca whales live near the surface of the ocean while the submarine remained deep in the ocean, so that the submarine should not hear the odd sound from the surface. If the whales were close to the submarine, they would be detected by the sonar.
Secondly, the writer believes that the quackers might be caused by giant squids. On the contrary, the professor points out that the sounds were heard and reported for 2 decades from 1960s to 1980s, and they totally disappeared since 1980s. But the giant squids always live in that area until today.
Lastly, the writer believes that the foreign submarines led to the quackers. However, the professor refutes it by saying that the origin of quackers moved and changed directions quickly, but modern submarines cannot do that. What’s more, every submarine makes engine noises, but no engine noises come with the quackers.
