The reading and the lecture discuss different theories of a specific type of stone in ancient times. The reading provides three reasons for special use of them for hunting, measuring and social customs. However, from the lecture's view, the mentioned reasons are not strong enough to be persuasive. Therefore, she repudiates them all.
First, the author claims that the stone balls have been used for hunting or fighting because of some evidence like grooves on their surface. On the contrary, the lecturer posits that some hunting devices like arrows have had wear surfaces. This sign clearly shows their application as an instrument for fighting or hunting by ancient people. However, the stone balls don't have such characteristics on their surface. In other words, their surface had been well preserved without any cracks or wearing signs.
Second, the article states that the stone balls had some applications as measurement devices for weight. This claim is made based on their similar shape. The professor opposes this point by saying that the stone balls could not be used for measurement purposes. Since they were made from different kinds of stones. Each kind has a different density. Hence their masses are different however they have the same shape and size.
Finally, based on the reading's assertion the stone balls had social applications in the past. In contrast, the lecturer argues that because of two main reasons the stone balls were not applicable for special social purposes. The first reason is that, although some stone balls had intrigued patterns, many of them have had very simple shape. Moreover, dead people from high social ranking had special positions for their graves. Since there is not any evidence of stone balls in their graves; the use of them is not probable in this regard.
