tpo 33

Both the reading and the lecturer talk about possible theories about a kind of light uniform carved stone ball found in the site of Scotland from the Neolithic period. The reading states three theories about the purpose of these stone balls. However, the lecturer finds these statements unconvincing and categorically opposes them.
Firstly, the author states that these stone balls were some sorts of weapons for hunting and fighting. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this idea, mentioning that like arrows and other handable weapons, they should have been damaged and cracked at least in some parts of the stones. While there are no such cracks or broken parts, they were unlikely to be applied as weapons.
Secondly, the reading states that those stone balls were used as a simple system of weights as they had similar round shapes. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this idea and mentions the fact that despite being so uniform in shape, these balls were made up of different types of materials like sand and grain with different densities. As it is clear uneven densities lead to different masses which refutes the theory made by the author.
Finally, the reading agrees upon the fact that with the picturesque ornaments of stone balls, it might have been some sign of social status for the people who had them. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on this point of view, citing that despite some of the stone balls were designed very much, some of them were as simple as their view served some aesthetical purpose. Moreover, if these stones belonged to people of that era, they should have been buried in their graves since they used to bury their properties with them whenever they died. However, no stone balls were found neither in the grave sites nor in their troops.
