The both passage and lecture discuss three assumptions around purposes and meanings that carved stone balls have. The passage holds up the hypothesis of these carved stone balls are meaningful. In contrast the professor states that the justifications of reading are not convincing and demonstrates three counterarguments.
To begin with, the author posits that since these carved stone balls have hole in them therefor, they may use as a fighting instrument. Although, the lecture refutes this and mentions that these balls not only cracked and broken but also they are very well preserved. In fact there are not any damage on them. In addition, people were using arrow at that time.
Moreover, the article indicates that these stone balls were used as a measurement for weight. In other words, people used them as a standard weight for weigh grain and other food on a balance or scale. On the other hand, the speaker refuses this and points out that these stone balls were made in different type such as sand stone or other materials. Consequently, some of them depending on their material would be in different weights.
Finally, the text claims that these balls may show a social purpose. Indeed, they could present their owners high ranked status. However, the lecture denies this and illustrates that these kind od balls indicate special pattern which is too simple to consider as a significant statue. Chiefly, at ancient time they buried dead bodies with their positons or status. As a matter of fact, archeologists coul not find any of them in graves. Hence, these balls could not be built for social status.
