Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.
The article states that cloud seeding by chemical like silver iodide is a very useful method to prevent hailing and increasing other precipitate like rain and snow instead and provides three reason of support. In the other hand, the professor said that these results are not clear and opposes each reason in the article.
First, the article avers that laboratory results support this theory which cloud seeding will decrease the hail formation and increase the chance of rain and snow. However, the lecturer argues this by explaining that these results have come from laboratory experiments. there is no guarantee that those will happen in the real situation. she asserts that this silver iodide can decrease not only the hail formation, but also it can prevent the rain and snow formation and finally cause drought and lack of water.
Second, the article brought some evidence from urban areas in asia to support her theory. In contrast, the professor opposes this and explained that these results may not be repeated in USA she adds that there are some differences between the climate and weather situation in polluted urban area in asia and clean farmland in USA she believes that pollution particle in the cities are good starter for cloud seeding. she asserts that this may not work in this clean area.
Third, the article adds some local studies results to its supportive evidences. it says that the silver iodide seeding can protect the crop in the field. On the other hand, the professor believes that in these local areas they did not included the neighborhood of them and there is some natural weather variation which can attribute to the results.
