TPO 37

The article states that an invention, Turtle Excluder Device (TED), can be an appropriate solution for endangered turtles, which accidentally caught in the commercial nets, to find a way which turtles can escape through it. But, there is some criticisms about TED and the article provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that it is a perfect idea and casts doubt on each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading posits that with this idea, turtles get trapped rarely, and it is not satisfying for shrimpers. The professor refutes this point by saying that there are a lot of shrimpers all over the United States and it leads to adverse aftermaths. He states that because those turtles are endangered animals, even they get trapped accidentally it would lead to their extinction.

Second, in the article it is claimed that one method to protect those turtles is to decrease the time limit for shrimpers to keep their nets underwater. However, it sounds like a good idea but just in theory, the professor say. According to the professor, it is implausible to force shrimpers by time limit and government officials cannot monitor this whole limitation.

Third, the reading asserts that TEDs are not useful for species of sea turtles, which are larger, due to the fact that they cannot escape from nets designed based on the TED's standards. The professor opposes this point by clarifying that it is not a big problem. He states that the design procedures are not so difficult. So, designers can produce larger TED nets to prevent this problem.
