Both the reading passage and lecture discuss about mass-extinction event that occurred at the end of the Triassic period. The author presented several hypotheses to explain the plausible explanation of that event which eliminated numerous species within a short time. However, the lecturer casts doubts on these theories and refutes them all by providing several counter arguments.
To begin with, the author asserts that fluctuation of sea level was occurred at that time and sea levels were lowered which ultimately destroyed habitats that lived in the shallow areas of ocean and in coast areas. Consequently, overall food chain got effected which lead to mass extinctions. Although lecturer agrees with the fact that sea levels fall during that period, he finds that it is very unlikely that might cause extinction of diverse species. She also mentions that this change was not as rapid that could make dramatic impact as it is natural that habitats would adapt to change in environment over that period.
Secondly, the author argues that, widespread volcanic activity caused rise of SO2 in atmosphere and global temperature was lowered. Such transformation in weather caused severe extinction of many species. In the contrary, the lecturer contends that SO2 in the environment can not stay for long period and excess SO2 should be cleared in form of rain. Therefore, though climate cooling might occur but this scenario could not stay for much long period and make that hazardous impact.
Finally, the author holds the view that asteroid strike might displaced of soil and crushed rock causing a displacement of debris that can block out sunlight for a long period of time. According to the article, Earth collided with asteroid at that period caused death of plants and eventually species died starving. On the other hand, the professor argued that researcher have not found any crater of that period. Though craters was discovered by scientists, but those occurred long before Triassic period and could not possibly block sunlight for that much time.
