TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

The reading passage explains the reasons why a permanent human presence on Venus is not feasible. Whereas, the lecturer counters the reading by providing a solution; by constructing a station floating at the elevation of 50 kilometers, the problems mentioned can be solved.

According to the reading, atmospheric pressure at Venus' surface is 90 times greater than that on Earth; hence, everything including spacecraft would be crushed once landing. The lecturer challenges that floating station at 50 kilometers above Venus' surface makes the atmospheric pressure bearable for human. In fact, it is the equivalent of that on Earth.

Second, the author suggests that there are barely oxygen and water on Venus and that it would be impractical to import these essentials from Earth. The lecturer refutes this point and contends that humans can convert carbon dioxide as well as sulfuric acid to oxygen and water vapor. In this way, humans can produce them instead of importing them from Earth.

Third, the author states that very few sunlight reaches the surface due to thick clouds, which contributes to the problem of generating electricity. The lecturer argues that it is solvable with the establishment of the floating station as it could collect the sunlight both from above and reflected below. Consequently, there will be adequate electricity to power machines.
